Word Smart: Improve your Pronunciation with Vocabulary

Learnex, English Forever ¡Aprende Inglés para Siempre!

“What?” “Can you say that again?” How many times do you hear this when you’re speaking? Even if your vocabulary and English grammar are perfect, it can still be difficult for people to understand you because of your pronunciation. Learning to pronounce English words correctly can be one of the hardest parts of learning English. The English language has some sounds that your native language might not, so you will have to learn how to make completely new sounds.

Plus, English vowels make it really tricky to know how to say a word. “Way,” “weigh” and “whey” are all said the same, for example, while “comb,” “bomb” and “tomb” are all pronounced differently.   Take a look at some of the videos below which will help gain vocabulary as well as practice your pronunciation.

  • Way: A method, style, or manner of doing something.
  • Weigh: Find out how heavy (someone or something) is, typically using scales.
  • Comb: A strip of plastic, metal, or wood with a row of narrow teeth, used for untangling or arranging the hair.
  • Bomb: An explosive device fitted into a specified object.

Read familiar texts/stories out loud. You are already familiar with the story in your native language and now you will practice it in English. By reading out loud, you are autocorrecting yourself and your pronunciation by what you hear. Your brain is also memorizing the words and making contexts.

  • What is the most difficult word for you to pronounce in English?

Welcome to this activity created by Regional Leader Ms. Marilynn de la Cruz from Reforma Branch. Take note of all the pink words, read the text, watch the video and answer the question in the comment section below.
