The Bahamas

Learnex, English Forever ¡Aprende Inglés para Siempre!

The Bahamas is a little piece of paradise on Earth for all those who want to forget about their busy lives. It’s a paradisiac country conformed by more than 700 islands, cays and islets. Its official name is the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and it was the first site where Columbus arrived in 1492.

The Bahamas used to be a British crown colony until 1973 and its capital Nassau was clamped down on piracy, just like that famous Johnny Depp movie, savvy? Now it’s an independent country, considered one of the richest countries in America among United States and Canada. The latter due to its economy based on tourism and finance.

Its name means shallow water and comes from the phrase “baja mar” in Spanish and with fair reason, because you can enjoy swimming in beaches that are not very deep. However, you can find the second deepest blue hole in the world, a large marine cavern that is open to the surface. Its year-round warm weather makes it ideal for a faraway trip when you feel overwhelmed by work and your daily life problems.

Remember that if you want to visit this country, you must consider it can be pricey, the official currency is the Bahamian dollar but the US dollar is also accepted and the main language is English. So if you want to relax and practice your English on a spectacular vacation, the Bahamas is a great spot for you.
