Masterpieces: Metallica-The Black Album

Learnex, English Forever ¡Aprende Inglés para Siempre!

Metallica is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California. It was formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield. Metallica is one of the founding “big four” bands of trash metal, due to their aggressive melodies and fast tempos. The band has released 10 studio albums and it has won 9 Grammy Awards from 23 nominations.

For their fifth album, The Black Album, or Metallica, they started writing shorter, simpler songs because of how bored their fans looked during their concerts, although, their fans-from-hell believed that the singles released in this album were radio-friendly rock anthems instead of the trash metal promise from their earlier albums. Still, this was the band’s best-selling album.

One of the singles in this album, Enter Sandman, was the very first song that Metallica wrote for it, although the lyrics weren’t finished until much later. This song has a hooky, sinister, and hard-grooving environment, and the lyrics were originally about an infant mysteriously dying in its crib, but James Hetfield was asked to tone the lyrics down.

  • Due: Because of.
  • Hooky: Used to describe music that is nice and easy to remember.
  • Hardgrooving: In which there is a pattern being repeated a lot.
  • Crib: Where babies and young children sleep.

Sometimes changes are good, especially when you know something is not working very good for you, just as long as you never give up or stop trying, like when you’re learning English!

  • Do you think changing the style of their songs for The Black Album was a good choice? Why?
