Welcome to this activity created by Junior Advisor Mr. Braulio López from Polanco Branch. Please follow the instructions below and take note of all the pink words, you will need them for the special activity session.

  • Read the article carefully.
  • Answer the activities.

When we talk about transportation projects we refer to not only where to build roads, transit, sidewalks, and bikeways. It’s about taking care of the infrastructure we already have, in order to make our community and society even better.

What’s the point of this? It’s to ensure everybody has a safe and affordable option to get wherever they’re going.

Now let’s learn a little about some projects that will start this year!

hyperloop

Hyperloop

Hyperloop is a high-speed transportation system which was created by visionary entrepreneur Elon Musk. Musk, along his research team, has been working in the design and research of this system for over three years, and they have launched a few contests for universities interested in mass transportation in order to create the passenger pod that will be used by this system.

Hyperloop building and construction is being held at the HTT Research Centre, in Toulouse, France. The system is expected to be presented at the beginning of the current year, and this pod transportation is planned to be utilized as a commercial transportation system, for which viability studies and negotiations are being held worldwide.

The passenger pod will be made of advanced building and fuselage materials used mainly in the aeronautic and aerospace sectors, such as carbon fibre.

This transportation system will consist of a series of pods inside a tube, with which passengers could travel to distant cities in a relatively short time (e.g. from Mexico City to Tokyo you would travel for only 12 hours and 40 minutes, approximately!). This is because the maximum speed this system will reach is considerably faster than the transportation systems we currently use: it could reach up to 1220 km/h (about 759 mph!). The pod’s specifications are the following:

  • Length: 30 metres.
  • Diameter: 2.7 metres.
  • Weight : 20 ton.
  • Passenger capacity: between 28 and 40 people.

Questionnaire

  1. Where is the Hyperloop building taking place?
  2. What will the first route be?
  3. How many people can be inside the Hyperloop transportation system?

Learning Tip

Are you familiar with transportation systems? If you answered no to this question then try to investigate more about them! New information will catch you and you will be practicing your English without even noticing! Try to always investigate more and more about different topics, you’ll improve your language abilities and you will have an amazing vocabulary.

Argumentation:

  • Do you think this transportation system will be successful?
  • Plane tickets can be expensive, how much do you think this transportation will cost?
  • If it is affordable, would you use it?
  • The Mexico City-Tokyo route was used as an example, would you use this transportation only to save 4 hours of the trip?
  • Do you think the human body can withstand a 1220 km/h speed?

    1. Where is the Hyperloop building taking place? The Hyperloop building and construction is being at the HTT Research Centr in France.

What will the first route be? Maybe in the United States, because the project is being done at University of California.

How many people can be inside the Hyperloop transportation system? The passenger capacity will be between 28 to 40 people.

Do you think this transportation system will be successful? I don’t think the hyper loop going to be cheap.

Plane tickets can be expensive, how much do you think this transportation will cost? I think the tickets will be expensive, maybe 1.4 times the cost of a plane flight.

If it is affordable, would you use it? Of course yes!

The Mexico City-Tokyo route was used as an example, would you use this transportation only to save 4 hours of the trip? Yes, I will use it; just imagine travel around Mexico in less than a hour, it would take an hour from Mexico city to the limits of the country in Piedras Negras Coahuila.

Do you think the human body can withstand a 1220 km/h speed? Yes, I think it’s relative, if we see the hyper loop from outside, it’s going to be a blink! but if we will be inside the capsule, we can withstand the speed, even if we will travel a lot according to the physical laws, we will going to be young because the relativity.

      1. Thank you for your answers Ricardo! Technology is moving foward really fast and probably we’ll see this system in Mexico too. Did you know this system would work without a tube on Mars? Due to Mars atmosphere density of 1% compared to our planet, it would be possible and useful if humans began to colonize the red planet. Which others 2018 inventions do you know?
