Learnex, English Forever ¡Aprende Inglés para Siempre!

Leisure is simply defined by that time when you are not working, the free time you have to relax and do something you like. This means that leisure is composed by any activity you can do during your spare time, so you can imagine it’s a really long list.

Actually if you look through history, we can realize that leisure used to be a privilege for the upper-classes. Only people with money had more time to do other activities other than working. People started to do sports or outdoor activities depending on the area or country they lived in. However, it is believed it was considered leisure until the late 19th century.

The important point of leisure activities is doing it for fun and not duty. Keeping that in mind we can consider many activities such as biking, hiking, board games, roller skating, camping, listening to music, painting or reading books.

Culture can influence in the simple decisions of a leisure activity, some countries are used to having more time and enjoying it in different ways. In Italy for instance, they do something called “dolce far niente” which means the sweetness of doing nothing. In our culture full of workaholics sometimes it is blissful to just give yourself the permission to enjoy yourself with something you really like.

  • Spare: Something extra and not being used.
  • Duty: Something you must do because it is right or the law say you must.
  • Workaholic: A person who works a lot and finds it difficult not to do it.
  • Blissful: Extremely happy.
