We all love a good film that is able to make us feel the tension and intrigue of a climactic scene. Some of these sequences have passed to cinema history and have changed our expectations of any film of a specific genre. Let’s review the second part of the most shocking scenes in cinema.
SPOILER ALERT: The next scenes give away the entire plot of each movie, so if you haven’t watched them yet, stop reading.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
From M. Night Shyamalan, director of Unbreakable and Split, The Sixth Sense is definitely his greatest work and this plot twist in the ending hasn’t been matched. This film revolves around a kid named Cole Sear which has the ability to see and talk with dead people. We follow the story of Malcolm Crowe, a child psychologist played by Bruce Willis who tries to help this boy confront the horrible things he sees.
As we see how Cole starts to lose fear of ghosts we have empathized with the story of the psychologist and we believe his wife is cheating on him. But the biggest plot twist is to realize Bruce Willis’ character has been dead from the beginning. It’s a bit obvious if you look carefully at every detail but honestly there wasn’t a film with such unexpected ending as a reference.
After this movie, and the end of the 90’s, all the plot devices were always expected.
Star Wars is one of the most successful franchises of all cinema history. The success is such that we can still enjoy new films every year, whether it’s a sequel or a spin-off. However, there’s an iconic moment that defined the entire saga in the fifth episode in which Darth Vader, the ultimate super villain, reveals to Luke Skywalker, the hero of the story, he’s actually his son.
“He told me enough! He told me you killed him.”
“No. I am your father.” «No. No. That’s not true. That’s impossible!»
Many people rephrase the whole quote wrong, but this shocking revelation at this point of the film –when Vader has already chopped his son’s hand off- is what made this plot twist epic and the perfect example of a cliffhanger.
Another example of Stephen King’s amazing talent, combined with Kubrick’s magnificent vision to create one of the horror classic of all time. A family has to look over a hotel in an isolated place in the Colorado Rockies. But they slowly realize that something horrible has happened before. The young son has ‘the shinning’ or in other words, the ability of seeing dead people and other psychic abilities.
The plot twist is realizing the father, performed by Jack Nicholson, has lost his mind and it’s trying to kill his own family. And on top of that we can see at the end of the film a picture of the 1920’s decade where we can see Jack as part of the guests.
There are many theories about this ending and we still don’t know what it was all that about. Nevertheless, it’s still a masterpiece of horror and still keeps us wondering about this extremely creepy finale.
One of the first thriller endings that shocked the audience. It’s not only one of the classic films by the talented director Alfred Hitchcock, but also it added some elements the audiences haven’t seen before. The fact that the protagonist dies in the middle of the movie was the first element of surprise. The plot is about a secretary running away with her boss’ money and ends up hiding in an isolated motel.
The person who runs the motel is Norman Bates, a timid man who has severe mother issues and we can confirm it with his comments about his suppressive mother. We see this “woman” kill the protagonist. However, at the end we realize that Norman’s mother has been dead all along and he has been taking the place of his mother.
It was a controversial film and it’s considered one of the best films of the director.
There much are many movies with shocking plot twists and intriguing endings that make us wonder what was real or what could have happened. Another distinguish plot twist is the one in “Get Out”, the film that was released earlier this year (2017). This horror film was a pleasant surprise but not as you might think. It’s a refreshing movie, able to give you anxiety because you simply want to know what’s going on. We won’t spoil this one for you, so we strongly recommend you to watch it.
